Tile Estimating

The process of calculating quantities and costs for ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, and mosaic tile installations including setting materials.

What is Tile Estimating?

Tile estimating is a specialized discipline within flooring estimating that focuses on ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, and mosaic tile installations. It encompasses the tile itself plus all setting materials, waterproofing systems, edge profiles, and grout required for a complete installation.

Purpose

Tile work involves more accessory materials than most other flooring types, making accurate estimating critical. Beyond the tile square footage, there are thinset mortars, waterproofing membranes, backer boards, grout, caulk, edge profiles, and specialty items like shower niches and linear drains that all need to be quantified.

How Does it Work?

The estimator reviews floor plans, wall elevations, and tile schedules to identify every tiled surface. They calculate tile square footage by type and size, measure grout joints, quantify edge conditions (bullnose, Schluter profiles), calculate waterproofing areas for wet zones, and count all accessories. Waste factors for tile typically range from 10% to 15% depending on layout pattern and tile size.

Benefits

Professional tile estimating ensures that all components of a tile installation are included in the bid -not just the tile itself. This prevents the common problem of winning a job only to discover that waterproofing, backer board, or specialty trim wasn't included in the original estimate.

Conclusion

Tile estimating demands attention to the complete installation system, not just the finished surface. Accurate tile estimates cover every layer from substrate preparation to the final grout joint.
